The community of Gateway is located about 12 miles north of Madras. In earlier times, Gateway was a natural destination of railroad and vehicular travel. The road that was later to become Highway 97 passed nearby.
The community is located near the area where Trout Creek merges with the Deschutes. Many people have passed through this community on their way to make a two day raft trip on one of the exciting white water trips available on the Deschutes river.
